St. Matthew tells us that by setting in Capernaum, “a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulun and Nephtaliâ€, Jesus fulfilled the words of the prophet Isaiah. Without saying or doing anything particularly spectacular, Jesus fulfilles a prophecy in the scriptures by staying in a certain place. For St. Matthew, Jesus is the new king. Jesus is the one who has come to call people from darkness into the light of a relationship with Him. Preaching a message of repentance, Jesus brings the kingdom of God close in His very person. The fishermen of the Sea of Galilee instinctively and immediately responded to the invitation of Jesus. Whatever darkness meant to them, they saw and met in Jesus a great light. Whenever we have a sense of walking in darkness, we can take courage from the great light that has come into the world. Whatever shadows might fall across our lives, Jesus is the one who calls our name and invites us to tread in His steps.
